Every change must then be validated for durability and stability, and that testing is a fixed cost spread across a lower production volume than the standard trim.
Tires and wheels carry disproportionate cost

Electronic traction modes require calibration work for each surface the manufacturer claims to support. That development effort is invisible on the window sticker.
Skid plates, recovery points and reinforced mounting structure add weight and cost while reducing payload, which is a trade buyers rarely see quantified.
Warranty risk is priced into the trim
A vehicle marketed for off-road use will be used that way by some owners, and manufacturers anticipate higher claim rates on driveline and suspension components.
That expected cost is built into pricing. It is one reason the same hardware costs more from a manufacturer than a comparable aftermarket assembly does.
Factory hardware also arrives integrated with stability control, traction systems and driver assistance calibration. Aftermarket parts require the owner to accept whatever interaction results.
Financing and insurance treat the factory version differently as well, since it is documented on the original window sticker rather than added afterward.
Resale strength supports the premium
Off-road trims have generally retained value well in the American used market, because demand exceeds the limited numbers built and buyers seek specific configurations.
Strong residuals reduce lease costs and cushion depreciation for owners, which changes the effective price of the premium over a holding period.
Buyers who never leave pavement still pay for the hardware. The honest question is whether the appearance and resale behavior justify a firmer ride and higher running costs.
